Univers Commits to Science-Based Climate Action

The latest IPCC climate science is sobering: we are on the brink of irreversible climate tipping points. The United Nations has declared it “code red for humanity”. The science is clear — it is still possible to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C, but only if we act now and act boldly. We are dangerously close to breaching that temperature threshold, and the next few years will determine the future of our planet.

Tackling climate change demands more than ambition, it requires urgent climate action backed by science. Setting science-based emissions reduction targets and having them validated by the SBTi is a rigorous and highly selective process. As of today, according to the SBTi website, only 8,606 companies have validated science-based targets, and just 2,007 have approved net-zero targets.

At Univers, we have stepped up to this challenge.

We are proud to announce that Univers is now the 2,008th company globally to have approved near-term, long-term, and net-zero targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (“SBTi”) — the global gold standard for corporate climate commitments. The SBTi has verified Univers’ science-based net-zero targets by 2040, positioning us as corporate leaders of the low-carbon transition.

This milestone reflects our deep-rooted commitment to credible, measurable climate action, and sets a strong foundation for delivering real, science-based decarbonisation across our value chain. Our science-based targets demonstrate our continuous commitment to building a sustainable economy, by doing not what is easy but what is necessary.

Our overall net-zero target: Univers commits to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain by 2040.

Our near-term science-based targets:

• Univers commits to reduce absolute scope 1 GHG emissions 42% by 2030 from a 2023 base year.
• Univers also commits to continue active annual sourcing of 100% renewable electricity through 2030.
• Univers further commits to reduce scope 3 GHG emissions 51.6% per million USD value added by 2030 from a 2023 base year.

Our long-term science-based targets:

• Univers commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 90% by 2040 from a 2023 base year.
• Univers also commits to reduce scope 3 GHG emissions 97% per million USD value added by 2040 from a 2023 base year.

These targets are not just aspirational, they are grounded in science and fully aligned with the SBTi’s 1.5°C pathway. In line with the SBTi Net-Zero Standard, we will prioritise direct emissions reductions and all residual emissions will be neutralised (if applicable) in line with SBTi criteria before achieving net-zero emissions.
